Ikea's Open Source Plans - Growroom

Growroom was designed in a Ikea lab called Space10

In the heart of Copenhagen’s meatpacking district, is a research hub and exhibition space called Space10. It's operated by Rebel Agency and made possible by IKEA. It's objective is to explore, design & innovate for a more meaningful and sustainable life for the many people.

And one of it's first releases is this 2.8m x 2.5m Growroom which you can build yourself using Space10's open source plans.

ALL YOU NEED TO BUILD THE GROWROOM, IS TWO RUBBER HAMMERS, 17 SHEETS OF PLY WOOD AND A VISIT YOUR LOCAL CABINET MAKER WITH A CNC MILLING MACHINE. THE DESIGN FOCUSES ON MAKING THE ASSEMBLY EASY AND INTUITIVE FOR ANYONE TO HANDLE, AND THE GROWROOM IS PRODUCED FROM ONLY ONE MATERIAL.

The full plans, including downloadable cutting files, go to Space10, but here is the general idea:

MATERIALS

  • 13 sheets of plywood: 2440mm x 1220mm x 18mm
  • 4 sheets of plywood: 2440mm x 1220mm x 4mm
  • 500 stainless pan head screws: 3.5mm x 30mm

MACHINERY

  • CNC machine with a cutter, 8mm in diameter. Alternatively, the Growroom can be cut out on a laser cutter .
  • Table saw

TOOLS

  • Screwdriver
  • Appropriate bit for the screws
  • Drill, 2mm in diameter
  • 2 hammers

CNC-MILLED PARTS

The Growroom is produced in only one material, and is put together with hammers, or whatever hard object you have lying around, that can be used for knocking the chisels in place. On the edge of each level, the thin plywood is mounted with the use of the screws.

If you build a Growroom, Space10 ask you to give them a nudge on Instagram: @space10_journal + #SPACE10Growroom or shoot them an email on discover@space10.io.

The Growroom have a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License, which means that the design can be shared, copied and build upon without asking permission. The only condition is that you credit the original work to SPACE10 and architects Mads-Ulrik Husum and Sine Lindholm, throw in a link and indicate if any changes have been made.
