Good Design Awards 2020. Winners for sustainability

The Very Good Bra and Good Citizens have both won Good Design BEST IN CLASS Awards 2020

The winners of Australia’s peak international design awards – the highest honour for design and innovation in Australia were announced today during the 2020 Good Design Week.

The Very Good Bra received a prestigious Good Design Award Best in Class Accolade in the Fashion Impact category in recognition for outstanding design and innovation.

Good Citizens received a prestigious Good Design Award Best in Class Accolade in the Product Design Housewares and Objects category and a Good Design Award Gold Accolade in the Fashion Impact category in recognition for outstanding design and innovation.

More than 55 Good Design Awards Jurors evaluated each entry according to a strict set of design criteria which covers ‘good design’, ‘design innovation’ and ‘design impact’. Projects recognised with a Good Design Award must demonstrate excellence in good design and convince the Jury they are worthy of recognition at this level.

The Very Good Bra

The Very Good Bra was designed to be the world's first circular economy bra, in this case, botanical circularity was the choice. This bra can be burned, composted, wormed, or buried in soil at end of life and leave no trace.

The Good Design Awards Jury comments:

“THIS ENTRY DEMONSTRATES STRONG COMMITMENT IN ENSURING ALL ASPECTS OF THE PRODUCT ARE FULL COMPOSTABLE, WITH ZERO WASTE, TO CREATE DIFFERENTIATION IN THEIR MARKET SEGMENT.

THIS IS A CRUCIAL ELEMENT FOR PRODUCTS THAT CAN SHIFT THE DIAL ON THE END-OF-LIFE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT, AND IT IS COMMENDABLE THAT THIS IS IN THE LINGERIE CATEGORY, WHICH HAS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE IMPACT. THE DESIGN IS APPEALING AND IS PRESENTED IN A MANNER WELL SUITED TO THEIR TARGET MARKET. WELL DONE. ”

Good Citizens

The idea for Good Citizen glasses came after a discussion about global plastic waste with Nik Robinson's six and seven year old kids two and a half years ago. His eldest son, Harry, was particularly upset and couldn’t understand why people weren’t recycling more and using the waste plastic to make products. The Good Design Awards Jury comoments:

“ELEGANT, CLASSIC PROFILES AND CAREFUL CONSIDERATION OF SHAPE AND FORM, MEAN THESE GLASSES DO NOT NEED TO RELY ON RECYCLED MATERIALS TO BE RELEVANT AND PROMINENT IN THE MARKET. THE FACT THAT THEY ARE MADE FROM 100% RECYCLED MATERIAL IS OF INCREDIBLE SIGNIFICANCE. FROM A DESIGN PERSPECTIVE, THE HINGE SYSTEM IS PIVOTAL. THE MOST COMMON BREAKPOINT HAS BEEN MANAGED AS WELL AS THE SUSTAINABILITY ASPECT. A FANTASTIC PROJECT."

Good Design Awards

The annual Good Design Awards is Australia’s oldest and most prestigious international Awards for design and innovation with a proud history dating back to 1958. The Awards celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian market, excellence in architectural design, engineering, fashion, digital and communication design, design strategy, social impact design and young designers. Dr. Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia said:

“RECEIVING A GOOD DESIGN AWARD IS A SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT GIVEN THE VERY HIGH CALIBRE AND RECORD NUMBER OF ENTRIES RECEIVED IN 2020. AUSTRALIA’S GOOD DESIGN AWARD IS MORE THAN A SYMBOL OF DESIGN EXCELLENCE - IT REPRESENTS THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION TOWARDS AN INNOVATIVE OUTCOME THAT WILL ULTIMATELY MAKE OUR LIVES BETTER. THESE PROJECTS SHOWCASE THE SHEAR BRILLIANCE OF DESIGN AND THE POTENTIAL IT HAS TO IMPROVE OUR WORLD."

The 2020 Good Design Awards attracted a record number of submissions with an astonishing 835 design projects evaluated in this year’s international design awards.
