4 Easy Ways to Ditch Plastic Bags Forever

Kicking the plastic bag habit is easy, but it takes a little persistence

Giving up plastic bags is right up there with kicking any addictive habit. Alcohol, smoking, chocolate and coffee. Worse, plastic bags are free or inexpensive, convenient and don't harm you personally so there is no death based motivation giving you impetus. (Unless you are a turtle or any other animal that gets caught in one of course.)

After a few false starts, these interventions seem to have the highest success rates.

  1. Stash a small shopping bag you can roll up and put in your briefcase and in your bag. Put reusable shopping and freezer bags in the boot of your car.
  2. When you do your shopping list, make sure ‘recycle plastic bag’ is always on your list.
  3. Hang a cloth bag in your pantry and put ALL your plastic bags (shopping, bread, plastic wrap, newspaper bags) in the same place.
  4. When you leave the house, put your leftover plastic bags in your reusable shopping bags. That way you will put your plastic bags in the soft plastic recycle bin at the supermarket and be more inclined to remember to use your reusable bag next time!

Remember - like any habit you are trying to kick or a new one you are trying to start, you might have to have a few runs at it before it finally sticks. Don't give up. Just start again like it is your first day.
