What the Tesla Power Wall Means to You

Here's a quick summary of the Tesla Powerwall

The Telsa Powerwall system is battery storage of solar energy. It is designed as a supplement to grid power rather than a complete replacement.

  • Telsa is selling two models, a 7 kilowatt unit for home use and a substantial 10 kilowatt model which can store power for a week.
  • Telsa energy will see solar energy stored by day and used at night.
  • The batteries can also store cheaper, off-peak power at night & consume it during daylight

For those thinking this will see Telsa take on the major power companies, this will not be the case. All the major energy retailers are expected to ‘jump-into-bed’ with this technology.

Origin, Australia’s largest electricity retailer with more than four million clients, has already announced plans to offer the Telsa Powerwall to all customers, not just the 400, 000 solar enthusiasts on their books. The cost will depend on what you want & if you already have solar panels installed.

Will the Tesla Powerwall pay for itself?

Studies in America claimed the Powerwall would take 38 years to recoup its cost if you started without solar panels on your house. If you did have the panels, the payback period would be cut to 31 years. These figures were initially taken as gospel as they were released by an organisation with the seemingly prestigious title of ‘The Institute for Energy Research’.

Tesla hit back and put holes through these figures when it released a comprehensive knockdown of the I.E.R. claims. Telsa says in a country like Australia, the payback period is less than ten years, while also providing non-economic benefits as well.

The price?

Origin is quoting $16,500 for a ‘complete home energy solution.’ That includes 20 solar panels. Many of the solar energy companies like Natural Solar are selling packages including Tesla as well. If you’re interested, get several quotes. This promises to a competitive business.
