Simple Ways to Stay Fit and Healthy Without the Gym

If you are sick of the gym, don't like it or just can't afford it, shake things up by looking at the everyday through an exercise lens.

  • Join a dance class
  • Sign up for a team sport such as soccer or netball
  • Join a swim squad
  • Jog or brisk walk outside. Walk the stairs instead of taking the lift.
  • Go rock climbing
  • Exaggerate every lunge, lift, pull and stretch you undertake while doing housework or gardening
  • Do a set of lunges, squats or push-ups in the ad breaks while you’re watching TV
  • Walk, skate, roller blade or ride instead of driving
  • Have one ‘fun’ exercise each week that doesn't feel like workout. I.e. ice skating, riding a bike in good weather or swimming in the ocean
  • Do a set of lunges, squats or push-ups in the ad breaks while you’re watching TV

After doing all this exercise, make sure you get eight hours of quality sleep each night.

Science Notes

There really isn't a single exercise you do at the gym that cannot be reproduced in every day life - around the house, out with friends, going to the local shop. Look around you at the gym and think about it.  Tread mills are easily replaced by walking for 15 minutes rather than driving for 5. Replace stair walkers with... stairs and  walk the stairs rather than taking the lift. Team sports are a great way of making new, motivated friends as well as getting exercise. Swimming is a fabulous exercise for any age and squads are a great way to get motivated and improve technique.

Good health is technically more about the food you eat than the exercise you do. Make sure you kick-start the day with a healthy breakfast. Choose fruit and nuts as snack options. Write a grocery list and then stick to it, avoid the temptation to browse other food items. Stay away from processed sugar.>
