Suggested Uses
How to use hemp oil to to seal your furniture
1. Prep your surface
Before you begin, make sure your surface is clean and dust free.
2. Apply a coat of Hemp Oil
Don’t be alarmed by the colour! Hemp Oil is a deep green colour, but the colour will vary a bit between harvests. When first applied, Hemp Oil will deepen the colour of your finish but it will slowly lighten over time as the oil soaks in and cures.
You can use a lint-free rag, or a paintbrush to apply Hemp Oil, but our personal preference is a Wash Cloth. You don’t need much! Just wipe one thin coat over the surface and let it soak into the finish for 12 hours.
3. Buff it dry
Once the Hemp Oil has been left to dry for 12 hours, you can use a dry, lint-free rag to buff away the excess. If you’d like to add more sheen, keep buffing to add a bit more lustre to the finish.
For higher traffic pieces like coffee table tops, we recommend adding a second or third coat for optimal durability. Hemp Oil will slowly wear away over time so it’s best to re-apply every 2-3 years as needed.
Since Hemp Oil is an all-natural product with no chemical additives, it can take about four weeks to fully cure. You can of course start using your furniture or piece almost right away, but be mindful of the finish and use it gently for the first week.
How to Apply Hemp Oil on Wooden Floors
1. Clean the floor prior to applying the oil to the surface of the wood. For best results, vacuum the floor and then give it a final clean with a dry cleaning cloth. Avoid using water or a mop, as this will add moisture to the wood and potentially affect the colour, as well as keep it from absorbing the oil.
2. Soak one of your dry cloths in the Furniture oil. Your goal is for the cloth to be damp and full of oil but not dripping with the substance.
3. Apply it to the surface of the wood in an out-of-the-way corner to test your application methods and ensure you are happy with the results.
4. Rub the oil-soaked cloth onto the wood, using gentle back-and-forth movements while working with the grain of the wood. Do not work against the grain, as this can potentially “raise the grain,” causing a rough spot in the floor that needs to be sanded down. Allow the oil to soak in for at least five minutes before wiping up an excess.
5. Work your way across the room plank by plank. Pay attention to specific areas that are naturally darker than others, as you may need to apply more oil to the lighter sections around these natural dark spots to blend them in.
6. Wipe up any remaining excess with a clean cloth to avoid sections of unabsorbed oil. Allow the floor to dry for at least 24 hours.
7. Touch up any light-coloured spots with additional oil.
