EKKO SCORE: Energy Rated - Certified

Energy Rated - Certified is one of the declarations under the Ekko Score Energy, Utility & Building Standard.

The energy star rating is about energy efficiency – that is how efficient a model is relative to other models of the same size. More stars means more efficient – when compared to other models of the same size. Most products are given between 1 and 6 stars. However technology keeps getting better and so does energy efficiency and the rating system now goes up to 10.

EKKO SCORE: ONE ENVIRONMENTAL TRUTH TO SHOP YOUR OWN VALUES AGAINST EACH OF 10 STANDARDS. EKKO SCORED PRODUCTS ARE SCORED ON EVERY APPLICABLE STANDARD FOR COMPLETE TRANSPARENCY.

Why the Energy Rated - Certified declaration is important

The Equipment Energy Efficiency Program helps improve the energy efficiency of appliances and equipment. By buying more efficient models, households and businesses can consume less energy, save money on their energy bills, and help to reduce emissions.  You can get more information on this Certification; and the extensive data on all kinds of appliances on the Energy Rating website.

Does Ekko Score give equal weight to Formal Certifications and Self Declared Certifications?

Yes, where the impact of the claim is similar. This is how it works.

IMPORTANTLY, SELF DECLARATIONS ARE GOVERNED BY CONSUMER LAW. IT IS AGAINST THE LAW FOR BUSINESSES TO MAKE FALSE CLAIMS (INCLUDING IMPLIED CLAIMS IN A CONTEXT LIKE EKKO SCORE).

EVEN IF A PRODUCT HAS A FORMAL CERTIFICATION, THAT CERTIFICATION DOES NOT GUARANTEE THE ENTIRE INTEGRITY OF THE PRODUCT'S MAKE UP.

An example might be a Handmade, Australian, Certified Organic chocolate that contains Palm Oil. Under Ekko Score, this product would claim Certified Organic and would self declare: Zero Waste Production and Australian made, but could not claim the No Palm Oil declaration. This would mean a lower score under the No Exploitation Standard, making the inclusion of Palm Oil clear to potential consumers, without detracting from its other assets.
